A History of Learning to Think Well - This course is for anyone interested in learning more about what it means to think well by examing the ideas of key thinkers that have something to say about the nature of critical education, informal and formal education. We will consider work from John Dewey, 'Thinking in Education', considering concepts such 'intellectual curiousity' and 'fossilised thought'. We will also consider what the distinguishing features of critical thought are, along with ideas of learning to think well for the purpose of transformation (P. Friere and the Constructivism). The course will meet twice a week for five weeks from late April through to the end of May, meetings will be in the evening for two hours (most likely 7-9pm)

Critical Thinking - What is critical thinking? This course is for anyone who wants to gain a clearer idea of what it means to be a critical thinker by learning the thinking techniques that are adopted and used with increasing skill by critical thinkers. We will look at what a philosophical argument is, what criteria must be met for evidence to be deemed reliable, what logical flaws are and the various forms they can take, we will look at the use of appeals in reasoning, assumptions, principles and hypothetical reasoning. The course will meet twice a week for five weeks from mid June through to the end of July, meetings will be in the evening for two hours (most likely 7-9pm)

An Introduction to Philosophy (A Beginners Course). Looking at three areas of philosophy: Epistemology (Theory of Knowledge), Perception (Appearance and Reality), and Ethics (Good/Bad + Right/Wrong), we will explore what philosophy is; what the differences (and similarities) are between philosophy and science, religion, and literature? The aim of this course is to help us understand the unique yet general character of philosophy. (10 x weekly 2 hour sessions)

The Rational, Irrational and the Trans-rational - We'll be thinking about what it means to be 'rational' and by way of contrast what it means to be 'irrational'. What is it that the rational person does that the irrational person fails to do? We might think that one reasons well whilst the other doesn't, a good starting point, perhaps, but then again maybe it isn't as simple as that. What about the 'trans-rational' what does it mean to think in ways that go beyond our usual concepts and the usual ways we have of making sense of the world and our experiences of that world. Is such a way of thinking even possible and even if it is, can it be considered meaningful? For this course we will meet for four weeks - one evening a week 7-9 pm (Either Nov/Dec 2012 or March/April 2013 - if people state their preference we will go with the majority)

It is also likely that all of these courses will run again next year.

ABOUT SOUTHPORT PiPs
The Southport PiPs Group is one of the more recent additions to the Philosophy in Pubs (PiPs) network of around 40 groups across the country.

Groups in Southport average around 12 people weekly. Overall the membership of the group is about 40 and since it's inception back in June 2011 we have been attracting about 2 or more new members each week. Groups meet weekly on a Wednesday evening for a two hour philosophical discussion on a range of topics, chosen by the group in advance. For our Group's Latest Schedule CLICK HERE. For an up to the minute Topic Schedule from all of the Groups take a look at the main PiPs Schedule HERE.

Groups are informal in nature and open to all with no academic nor philosophical background being necessary. Just come along and enjoy the, often lively, discussion.
