New Fringe group off to promising start...

The new On The Fringe group in Southport got off to a good start last Thursday 12 January with an attendance of 12 on the night.

Yesterday's session attracted 20. We were all treated to a lively and insightful debate on the subject of 'celebrity'. Contributions from our newest members were plentiful and, for them, the PiPs experience will hopefully have been a good one and we look forward to seeing as many as possible for next week's enquiry.

So, an enormous "thank you!" to all those who came along and supported the group. It's so far so good for this new venue and really promising, given that the promotion out-and-about around the town (other than in the venue itself) has so far been relatively low key.

Well that was a really good enquiry at the Fringe, Thursday... How the heck we got from talking about 'fame and 'celebrity' to the world needing some good old-fashioned Beatles love, love love, well beats me... I just do not know... But that's PiPs for you, never a dull moment and 'psychological associations' like you've never known before in your lifetime... LOL!

Thanks folks it was good enquiring with you!

Hi,Paul here...what an enjoyable enquiry indeed!! It was really good to have so many people present offering differing facets of the nature of celebrity and talent. And good to have such a mixed grouping of people too.

Hi,AP (atheiat paul) here again...
Celebrity...trouble with it today is that it is everywhere you look, well, akmost everywhere. It invades and pervades the whole culture. THE x fACTOR,for example. Well,I woul;dnt mind it if it was on once a week for an hour say on a quiet tuesday night. But look at the contrast between that and what actually happens. Hours of footage, pages of newspaper coverage and it becomes almost impossible to ignore. And that is just ONE of the celebrity shows. All together, each week there must be HOURS of the stuff ON T.V...and adverts...and PAGES of the stuff in newspapers and magazines. For me,its not that I have a massive problem with Celebrity, its just that the balance for me is wrong.

Probably a fashion thing... you know the way trends take over in clothing, design, technology. Same dynamic?

Plus of course it sells. I asked that question (it was on the sheet, Thursday), whether it (celebrity) may be a natural outcome of a capitalistic, consumerist culture? Like, "if it sells then it will be sold if it sells..." ; Maximising profit. Leaves us awash with the stuff, every which way we turn... just in case we might buy. It's cumulative and very very pervasive, invasive even.

I wonder when it will begin to die away? Maybe it won't... maybe it will evolve in-line with its 'fit' for purpose..?
